Policy 11 Review Date March 2009 Health and Safety Policy
St James Cottage in acknowledging their duties under the Health and Safety at Work Act have produced the following Health and Safety statement:
St James Cottage will ensure as far as practicable the health, safety and welfare at work of all staff, students and volunteers and all persons within the premises for which we are responsible.
Safety Procedure
The nominated Health and Safety officer is Carol Cross.
Nominated Health and Safety officer to carry out a Risk Assessment on a regular basis making a written record of any action required. Also being responsible for reporting to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) under the duties imposed by The Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995 (RIDDOR) contact phone number 01202 667219.
Fire Policy
We aim to ensure the safety of staff and children against the risk of fire and will do all in our power to prevent such an occurrence.
Fire Procedure
· Fire drills, fire control equipment and records are maintained in accordance with St James First School procedures and a record is kept.
· There is no smoking in the premises or grounds of St James Cottage.
· Fire doors/emergency exits are never obstructed and are opened regularly to ensure that they are fit for the purpose.
· In the event of a fire, the St James Cottage Evacuation Procedure (as displayed) should be carried out.
Access Policy
We aim to ensure that all children attending the Pre-school/Nursery are kept safe and secure.
Access Procedure
The doors to the Group will be locked at all times and parents/carers will need to use their access procedure, e.g. knock, ring bell, upon arrival, to gain access.
Children will not be allowed to leave the Group with anybody but their parents/carers unless previous authority in writing has been received allowing another person to collect.
We will ensure toilet locks can be opened easily from the outside, to encourage children to develop their independence whilst preserving their safety.

Notification –Where changes are to be made to the premises we will notify OFSTED
Notification of Accidents, Hazards and Faulty Equipment
Any member of staff who notices a potential hazard or faulty equipment should notify the Management committee who will take action to resolve the problem.
Notification of accidents should be made in the accident book and the hazard removed or repaired to prevent reoccurrence. The Accident book should be reviewed periodically by the Health & Safety rep as well as the Management committee. Any pattern to incidents should be noted and action taken to prevent a reoccurrence.
Policy 11a Review Date March 2008 Risk Assesment Policy St James Cottage will conduct risk assessments to identify risks We will take all reasonable steps to ensure that hazards to children and staff are minimised.
1. Health & Safety at the Setting. We will use an annual risk assessment to identify, record and action any changes to risks that could occur on the premises of the setting. This will be reviewed at least annually or more frequently when the need arises. A record will be made of the date and name of the person conducting the assessment.
2. Outings. When planning outings we will make a specific record of the risks involved and record those risks on a risk assessment document. Copies of parent’s permission slips will then be attached to the risk assessment and the document stored in our records.
3. Child Supervision/ Ratios. A risk assessment will be produced to identify risks associated with children being collected form the school bus and/or St James First School.
Each risk assessment should contain the date it was carried out, the assessor , a date of review and any action taken following the review. It should always be reviewed following an incident.
