Aim
St James Cottage must plan and organise systems to ensure that every child receives an enjoyable and challenging learning and development experience that is tailored to meet the child’s individual needs.
Practice
Each child will be assigned a key worker from within the staff.
St James Cottage will ensure that there is a balance of adult-led and child-initiated activities, delivered through both indoor and outdoor play.
The Keyworker will take the lead in undertaking observational assessment in order to plan to meet young children’s individual needs.
Effective planning will provide experiences that are appropriate to each child’s stage of the early learning goals.
The Keyworker should endeavour to help the child to become familiar with the provision and to feel confident and safe within it, developing a genuine bond with the child.
Through effective communication, both verbally and in the recording of observations, the keyworker should be able to make an accurate assessment of each child’s development.
The key person should meet the needs of each child in their care and respond sensitively to their feelings, ideas and behaviour, talking to parents to make sure that the child is being cared for appropriately.
Keyworkers should have regard for the Equal Opportunities policy, valuing diversity, cultural differences, additional needs and language
.
